To start off with chickens, you can usually go to your Extension Agent and he can let you know if anyone in the area has some that they will sometimes give you for free. A lot of 4-H'ers have to show their abilities by hatching eggs (like the project I'm taking), but need to find homes for the chicks. You can also go to your local Feed and Seed store. If you want to buy chicks from a hatchery, two very good ones are on the internet. I like Murray McMurray because they have a beautiful catalog and many people say they are friendly and have a good experience with them. These catalog companies do not sell premium show quality chickens and they will tell you that. For show quality stock, go to poultry shows or ask your Extension Agent for the names of local breeders. They usually love to talk chicken! The county fair is also a good place to meet breeders who will also tell you about other breeders.
